U4 SPORTS I WHL ALL-STARS COMES TO PG W Shawn Mclaughlin The stars came out to shine as the WHL All-Star game made it's first appearance in five years, this one taking place in front of the sell-out crowd of 6000 at the Prince George Multiplex. The script could not have been written better for this one, as the Prince George Cougar's forward Jeff Lynch opened the scoring early in the first. Lynch, the sole contribution to the All-Stars from Prince George, had been left off of the roster for the Western Division, and was added only two days before the game. Lynch led the West in an early lead against the coming of the stars. Prince George's city father's turned down a proposal from TSN, who aired the game on national television, for an on- the-air tour of the city. A spokes-person from the Prince George Chamber of Commerce spoke on City Councils decision. "Apparently, the council didn't feel that some tourism publicity for Prince George was needed. They turned down a great chance." WHAT'S GOING ON WITH THE SKI HILLS?? fShawn Mclaughlin With the lack of new snow, and the recent frigid temperatures, one would think that the ski industry would be suffering. According to a spokes-person from Powder King Ski Resort, that's not the case. "We're not getting the volume of people that we had hoped to get this year. But with the crappy weather Old Man winter has dealt us, jPowder King is showing signs of growth. We re still getting more people out on the slopes this year than last year. It might have something to do with the fact that everyone was scared when the mountain was going to close, and are just making use of it now." Under the new ownership, Powder King Resort plans to continue increasing it's capacity. The expansion made a couple of years ago will be joined by more lodging facilities, and more "relaxed" concessions. On the other side of town, Purden Ski Village is offering stiff competition for the reigning King Azu. With the opening of a second chair lift and a dozen new runs, Purden now has a greater toe-hold on the industry, and offers a less extreme source of fun closer to town. Snowboarding has made it's mark also. Both Powder King and Purden have recently opened snowboard parks, and are expanding their abilities to accommodate the ever growing sport.
