ISSUE 5 1996 PHOTO ROOOft Robyn Schepens What everyone has begun to dread-Photo Radar! Unlike radar detectors we cannot outwit these little darlings! Of course, no system is perfect! What exactly is the deal with this wonderful gadget? How photo radar works is there will be a little radar van parked on the side of the road. No, these people are not sight seers, they are police officers with $70,000 worth of equipment all to take a picture of your license plate. The camera has a 62 meter range so there is a pretty good chance, you will KRISTIN ANDERSON "It's entrapement, I feel police are trying to make us break the law. Because if you see a cop car, it's a reminder to slow down. They got rid of it in Ontario, they should get rid of it here." KURTMUNGER "Well I haven't really thought of it much! I guess it's good and bad. What I like the most is it is aimed at the top 10 of speeders! I don't like that you can be nailed for something you didn't do, because the car is ticketed, not the person." be caught speeding-If you are that is! The camera can take up to 3 pictures a second of either the front or back plate. If you were speeding the registered owner of that vehicle will receive notification in the mail that heshe has a speeding fine. If you have a problem with this because you were not driving, what you would heed to do is make provisions to nominate a driver. To all those parents that lend their cars to their kids-Quit now before you find world war III happening in your home because no one will own up to the speeding ticket! Photo radar became effective in Prince George officially March 1st of 1996. The target area will be the top 15 of speeders. Only warnings will be issued until July 1st when photo radar will take full effect. Many of us have heard that there will be signs posted stating when you were in a photo radar zone. That is not true so if you are on the lookout for signs-there will not be any. The only good thing that I can think of with photo radar is that along with the speeding ticket-there is not any points. Once you pay the fine, you are done with it. (Until you get your next one.) I must wish all of you luck and give you two more pieces of bad new. Yes, your radar detector will work, after the picture has been taken. One more, photo radar does work at night. P.S. did you know that in British Columbia it is illegal to drive without a front license plate! JIM BALOG "I don't agree with the fact that the vehicle is ticketed and not the person driving it. What happens if you lend your car to a buddy? I agree that stopping speeding is important and that photo radar is a deterrant, but feels that taxpayers money could be bettter put to use in stopping drunk driving." CRAIG ENGLESEN "It's frusturating! It's trickery! What happens if your car gets stolen and the idiot is speeding. It's the double whammy scenario! The car's gone, and you get a $100 ticket."
