ISSUE 6 1997 fnw Ww TO ftfiP w!P JHw to Wta B PWfl v&J WF. w Ww TOW Contributed by Laird Lynch The purpose of this article is not to offend anyone but to offer a forum where certin issues can be addressed. I do not claim to be an expert on any of the topics, opting for a common sense route with some backup research. If you wish to write me a letter via E-mail, my address is lynchlcnc.bc.ca, or you can write in to the paper. Having said that "Let's get Lynched." Is it just me or is there a serious problem with today's justice system? It appears that the "justice" has taken a back seat to the "system". In a world where we all believe that we are so civilized and cultured, it is hard to believe that we allow great wrongs to occur without proper vindication. The worst of these wrongs would be the taking of another's life. Living amongst the human population are killers, people who are as dangerous as any predator found in the wild. The human killer is vile due to the cognitive ability he possesses. Although the nature of his crime is known it is disregarded. When such an animal is found we restrain and lock them up, keeping society safe by separating them from us. This is not such a bad idea, but here is my question: If such a beast exists, why should we bother spending good money, and wasting valuable time on the son-of- a-bitch? We pay for his health, shelter, entertainment and education. Again, I ask why?!? Why don't we just execute the murderer? Some would answer, because in taking his life we become just as bad as he is. To this "two wrongs don't make a right" argument, I respond by saying that we are not evil for ending the life of the psychopath! I say we are just being responsible, 111 It WET "i gpKZ SYSTEM ife3 HtaMMll HMMMmm f"M jijF IK IB MHRr pBy V HBMIHdF Hi wk HB1 wk for we do the act without joy and anger, we do it because it must be done in order to protect the people a serial killer terrorizes; and in order to stop wasting so much resources on treating these dogs better than what they deserve! Another argument is that if we are to execute, who is going to push the button? You? I can only answer in my own subtle way, in a heartbeat! You see, I like the idea of three people pushing the button! Three people representing justice because it is the nation which would be deciding, not just one person alone. We, as a society, have this very wonderful concept of respecting and putting a value on life, but these people don't. They have no regard for human life and we will never be able to teach them otherwise! Human garbage such as Clifford Olson, infamous for his kidnapping and murdering of children, and Bernardo, who back east shocked the world with his cocksure attitude and good looks after raping and killing women along with his wife who was an accomplice, don't deserve any respect from members of the human race! By their own despicable actions, I believe, they have given up their rights as human beings, and there should not be any remorse felt when justice is served. I wonder how many people felt sympathy for him? I know I felt none, quite the contrary, I felt that the right thing had been done. The only thing I did not feel good about was that justice was left for another criminal to administer, that the people could not get together and act in a responsible manner and put the butcher down themselves. Capital punishment is a very serious form of justice and obviously should not be used without a great amount of care. In certain cases it is the most viable solution. Not only because all of the jails are full, not only because by keeping them alive it is leaching off our own capital, but because they don't have a right to be alive. If a person enjoys killing and lacks the ability to admire and respect life, then that person is not really human, and therefore deserves nothing more than a decent execution and an adequate funeral!
