They believe that when con sumers become aware of the high percentage of companies who test on animals for cosmetic purposes, they will begin to speak out against this inhumane form of testing. The Body Shop believes that, the now aware, consumers will use their purchasing power and veto those companies who do use animal testing and encourage those who do not speak out against it to do so. Tens of thousands of animals are killed in tests conducted for cosmetic or toiletry purposes. These tests are not needed, so why are these animals suffering? There are over 8, 000 ingredients which are presently available for use in the cosmetic industry which need no further testing. The Body Shop is campaigning for a world wide ban on animal testing for cosmetic purposes. They believe that testing cosmetics and cosmetic ingredients on animals is unethical, and unnecessary. Since December 31, 1990, The Body Shop has had a purchasing rule which they have followed diligently. Their purchasing rule states that The Body Shop will not purchase ingredients which have been tested or retested on animals for cosmetic purposes. A spokes-person from The Body Shop believes that the purchasing rule makes things difficult for suppliers but states that the purchasing rule is fully attainable. OGGIWST they do realize that new products will be developed, and that there is a need for them. The Body Shop acknowledges that they too will need new products in the future but they say that they will use alternative tests which have been developed for such use. There are over five alternative tests available which do not harm any living thing and The Body Shop believes that they are more than sufficient to take the place of testing on animals. The Body Shop is asking you, as a purchaser of these products, to ask questions and find out if the product that you are purchasing has been tested on animals. They want you to ask about the ingredients as well, and if they have been tested on animals, take a stand, do not buy the product and let it be known why.
