8 CNC Free Press, January 1 1, 1999 Why's It So? We're out of Time by G.S. Whyte the scenario: The Here's watch that you've worn and trusted for a couple of years is broken and you're running to school so you're not late for your first class. (Oh yeah, your car wouldn't start this morning. That's why you're walking) The first clock you see tells you there's still half-an-hour before you have to be there. Heaving a sigh of relief, you head to the cafeteria for breakfast, stopping in the bookstore on the way for some paper. There is a rather long line up, and it seems to take forever before you finally reach the cashier to pay for the merchandise. You decide you'd best check the time again, and you find only thirty seconds have passed. After a few seconds of doubt, you head for the cafeteria to do some last-minute studying. You see someone from your class and ask them the time. Your friend looks at the clock and says you still have 45 minutes until the beginning of class. You find out ten minutes later, from a couple of other people in the same class, that both of you have just missed class completely. Now you are completely confused Why's it so? Simple. For starters, since your watch is in the shop, you don't have a consistent timer. Relying on CNC's clocks could lead one to confusion, since no two clocks in the college are synchronized to the same time. Yeah, all of them are working right, but while some show Prince George time, others are showing the time in the mid-Atlantic, Norway or Greenwich, give or take half an hour or fifteen miniates. I'm not saying that it's bad to know what time it is in Berlin, Germany. Who knows? Perhaps somewhere in town, someone's watch IS three-and -a-half hours ahead of the rest of us, or behind as the case may be. The moral of this story is... When you're in the College of New Caledonia, either wear a watch or hang around someone who does. you rely on the clocks, you will quickly become a completely confused and stressed-out clock watcher. And more stress is just what you need, right? "As quoted in room l-308b, "Don't be a clock watcher. Be a College watcher." iroisiiH - Winter Re-creation.
