Page 02 From The Editor... When it comes to the bungling of finances, the Fed's could learn a thing or two from our Student Association. According to the Student Association's own records, between the time they came to office (early October) and December 1st, they had already squandered over five thousand of your dollars on their per diems. The association receives personal per diems of $50 per day when they leave town on business. They left town a lot.. Consider this: Five thousand dollars at fifty dollars per day would equal one Student Association member being away for a hundred days or, the entire council gone for over 14 days. The council might have better spent this money actually on the students. Let's see, with five thousand dollars, they could have purchased over 70 CNC vs. REALLY Post secondary education provides the ability to move up" the world like no other activity. But which Prince George institution provides the better education? I will attempt to provide a comparison. Now that the CNC education monopoly has been broken with the establishing of UNBC, there is some bitterness at CNC. Not only is UNBC higher physically, it offers higher levels of education, new facilities and a superior attitude. Only Ph.D. professors are allowed to teach at UNBC. Johnny off the street with lots of work experience can teach at a college. UNBC is often quoted in the local media as the place to find experts on subjects ranging from forestry to statistics. CNC is not. The dorms at UNBC provide community living for 500 students. Groups of four students sharing a kitchen, living room and each others' company. All textbooks or paid for about 34 3 credit courses. Before they helped themselves they should have tried to help the students they were elected to serve. Personally I did not know my student fees would go to buy council members embroidered jackets and personalized Christmas stockings. The council has wasted our money on trips to places like Quebec, the Island and several other more local destinations, all paid for out of our pockets. The Council takes money from it's Building Fund to continually pay off it's debts. In the words of Student President Brent Whyte this action is, "...not legal". The Building Fund was meant to be saved until such time as the school could afford to build a new wing in order to better aid students. The Association is now trying to find legal loop holes to escape the Taxman and keep it's TO Iml CNC residents must share one kitchen. The on-campus pub at UNBC is not housed in a structure resembling an ATCO trailer. UNBC's new forest science building will be finished in time for the next academic year providing world class research facilities. In contrast, the renovations to CNC will start when the funding can be secured. This would appear to be some time in the new millennium (3000). However, CNC does have two things to offer students. It's homely atmosphere allows for close student interaction. The friends made here will provide working relationships for later in life. The second point is with the cost of tuition at UNBC, it's no wonder that students decide to start here. And there's the rub; they cant' finish here. CNC's proud tradition of offering education to students will continue. "Society" status. In Vancouver, students dissatisfied with their student council have "elected to not pay their student fees. I encourage all concerned students to come to the student association and ask to see the Councils financial books (under their constitution they have to produce within 24 hours upon request) and see for yourselves. I also encourage students to write letters to the College President demanding reimbursement for simply wasted money. Oh, and has the Student Association done anything for you? Why yes, they hosted a quiet party in December which set them further in debt by about twenty-four hundred dollars. By the way, when the council is away on business, they are entitled to one free drink on our backs, I don't want to buy these people a drink. So, Student Association Executive, for all you do, this Bud's for you... EDITOR UNBC: WHO'S KING OF THE HILL? Welders, carpenters and journalists will graduate every year allowing for some joy. And every year, new faces will walk the halls bringing a promise of continued success. Yet with every passing year, the shadowed cast by the new post-secondary institution will slowly cover CNC. Student and Northern BC will forget the hurhble vocational school in the bowel and will look to the beacon on the hill: UNBC.
