Page 10 Continued from p.03 brain imaging techniques (PET) conducted on chronic MDMA users showed that there were significant reductions in the number of serotonin transporters throughout the brain. Memory tests were also performed and the chronic users had significant impairments in visual and verbal memory. These tests were conducted two weeks after MDMA use was discontinued. Other studies show that some chronic MDMA users suffer from insomnia, anorexia, severe depression, lethargy or anxiety attacks. Ecstasy is not a physically addictive drug but it can be psychologically addictive as a chronic user could end up relying on it to "feel good". These disorders would indicate that there is some kind of change going on in the serotonin system. However, this is an area of controversy. Test results are often inconclusive as the brain is still considered an incredibly complex organ. A lot of the impairments seen in the memory tests could be a result of the brain correcting it's chemistry after MDMA use was discontinued. The psychological disorders that chronic users suffer from can be treated and are not necessarily permanent. Nor is it known for sure if these disorders are a result of MDMA use or are pre-existing conditions. Small to moderate amounts cause damage but leave the serotonin system still functioning while large amounts can destroy it completely. There is not enough evidence to know for sure what is in store for MDMA users in the future but contrary to popular belief, you can have too much of a good thing. So now you know some stuff. Figure 1 Bill, a healthy, able-bodied young male and Sue, a physically fit, athletic young female are abducted from their campus by paradimensional invaders, the MR Happie Baddies. In the "lair" Bill and Sue are given an average dose of MDMA. Once the effects of the drug begin to take hold Bill and Sue are forced into the "depletion area". Here Bill and Sue are forced to "move their bodies" to an irreverent, unrelenting throbbing and are only allowe to break occasionally for nourishment. To avoid overdosing or death Bill and Sue must adhere to a few tricks. Conditions in the "depletion area" are hot, sweaty and cramped with other test subjects. Both Bill and Sue have been "moving" for hours and are sweating heavily. They take one of their allowed breathers. MDMA increases the bodies temperature and when mixed with fervent "moving" the body loses fluids along with essential salts and minerals. To make up for what is lost it is important for The CNC Free Press March 2000 .1 : MDMA Effects Bill and Sue to consume fluids. Water is the most important though it is not an antidote to MDMA's effects. Bill and Sue know that too much water is just as bad as too little. Too much wate can cause the level of sodium in the blood to become diluted and then the water gets lost into body fabric causing swelling. This can cause the brain to swell, putting pressure on the stem which controls heart and breathing functions. This can be fatal. So given Bill and Sue's predicament 500ml of water an hour should do the trick. To make up for lost salts and minerals Bill and Sue sip isotonic drinks or snack on peanuts. They never drink alcohol. They also cool down by focusing on their breathing and heart rate as well as occasionally splashing cool water on their faces. Bill and Sue are the lucky ones. Neophytes that don't know the tricks suffer from hyperthermia, heart attacks, strokes or seizures. Of course it isn't the drug alone that triggers these undesirable effects. People ME)y shous as who suffer from epilepsy diabetes, asthma or pre-existing heart or liver disease as well pregnant women should avoid using MDMA and should explain their juxtaposition to the MR Happie Baddies.
