January 2003 Support Your Kodiaks B Alex Ternowetsky I ? j "Support your Kodiaks; ?use your facilities!" These : might sound like the orders of a domineering tyrant, but they are not. They are the New Year's wishes of a friendly and i enthusiastic lady, Ann Oishi: the Athletics and Recreation Coordinator at CNC. As I sat .in her cramped janitor's washroom of an office, I realized I was in front of an extremely rare specimen: an individual who cares about her job. I hardly consider k myself an ethical man, so the waves of' hypocrisy 1 felt coursing through my blood didn't really bother me. But : they were there. f Let me be clear: I don't .care that much about CNC sports. When my vigilant overlord, er, editor, handed -me the assignment I was fair- ly lost. I went to the gym and .stood around. The pennants on the walls all spoke of CNC victories. Besides, the gym was as empty and silent as the mind of a Kodiak bear. I ran out - right into Ann Oishi. It was pretty ridiculous at first. We sat in her office and I tried to impress her with what I imagined was professionalism. I asked about the win-loss records of our Kodiak basketball teams. She blushed. An unusual reaction for such a benign inquiry, I thought. But as she answered my question as delicately as possible, I realized she was blushing for me. CNC does not have basketball teams, she explained, perhaps I meant volleyball? Well, it was my turn to blush now, and Oishi looked away as my cheeks throbbed red and my mouth fumbled over an apology. But Oishi wouldn't hear it. She wasn't upset, she was puzzled. And as she spoke I realized her puzzlement had just set down the thematic foundation for the Free Forum's first ever sports article: widespread campus indifference. Why are our volleyball and squash courts, and weight room always so empty? These questions confronted me as I sat in Oishi's office. Her enthusiasm was too intense not to impact my indifference. She spoke highly of both our men's and women's volleyball teams, confessing her belief that both teams would finish the season with much more panache than they have shown thus far. She told me that Kodiak volleyball games offer some of the most exciting sports entertainment in Prince George; and, by the light that came into her eyes as she made this claim, I believed her. On January 17th, 2003, when our Kodiak volleyball squads take on Malaspina College, here at CNC, I'm going to be in the stands. Afterwards, I'll feel pretty good about having heeded her New Year's wish: "Support your Kodiaks; use your facilities!"
