News February 2003 Blaikie praises Free Forum, urges participation Alex Ternowetsky Federal NDP leadership candidate Bill Blaikie is a Free Forum kind of guy. Blaikie, who visited Prince George in January as part of his national campaign tour, was pleased to learn that CNC has relaunched its independent, student-run newspaper after an absence of two years. Though Blaikie, an MP in the WinnipegTranscona riding, was unfamiliar with the CNC paper, he called the emergence of Free Forum "an important event" in the local process of democracy. "The more independent newspapers the better," Blaikie said, "because we do have an incredible amount of corporate concentration and convergence in the media, with different forms of media being owned by the same people." Blaikie and Toronto city councilor Jack Layton are widely considered the two front-runners in the NDP federal leadership race. As members of a left wing party rooted in working-class social activism, both Blaikie and Layton know what BMBIIiit I I MJuMr -Bill -'.. imm"' iiiiiiiiiiiiii''gjMMl. , MkMm, tiiWM ' ' Bill Blaikie holds up the Free Forum in ent media. Speaking before a group of NDP members at the Hospital Employees Union in downtown Prince George, Blaikie claimed that the difficulties attached to expressing dissent in the national media have a lot to do with the growing frustrations and fears of young people in Canada. "It's getting to the point where they don't participate in democracy because they don't believe they can have an impact," he said. "They can have an impact, but the way our media is set up it isn't always easy." "Blaikie claimed that the difficulties attached to expressing dissent in the national media have a lot to do with the growing frustrations and fears of young people in Canada. " Blaikie believes newspapers like Free Forum can effectively initiate this impact. Though he has his own ideas of what he'd like to see written, he says it's more important that alternative media remain accessible to diverging points of view: "Obviously I'd like newspapers to agree with what I have to say, but what we want ultimately in a democracy is a variety of opinion." Blaikie's future with the NDP party of Canada will become a little clearer on January 25 when the national leadership election takes place. Whatever the result, Blaikie is determined to remain an active voice in the Canadian political landscape as the country's future unfolds. He's been a member of parliament for the past twenty years, so his participation is fairly certain. What is less certain, is the participation of CNC students in issues that concern them directly. As Blaikie would attest, the existence of Free Forum places members of the student body in the enviable position of having a public voice. Whether they use it or not, remains to be seen.
