Fliek With exams on their way, or over for some of us, our thoughts turn to summer. Jobs, trips, family vacations, or just weekend getaways are on the horizon for most of us. I bet there are a few of you outs there who can already envision the great adventures that are going to take place. The summer love affair, the great job, the preplanned road trip with friends. Then there are some of you that have no clue how to spend the summer months; it is with you in mind that I write this column. I believe that movies can help us all if we watch them correctly and take from them what we can. I compiled a few movies that you can rent to help you think of something to do this summer, or to just watch and enjoy while streets steam outside. At the top of the list is Amencan Pie Tuo The gang returns after being away at college for the first time. They vow to make it the summer to remember by packing up and moving to a small lakeside town where all kinds of funny and exciting things happen. It is the perfect movie for those of you who are going to spend summer with your friends and enjoy their company. Dazed and Confused is another classic you might want to check out. That last day of school party, which gets the gears of a great time turning, is just what we all need to make sure that this summer is the best time we spent with our friends. For those who seek some sort of romantic endeavour, nothing deals with that aspect of our lives better than Dirty Dancing. Away at a summer resort, Baby meets Johnny and they have a secret summer love affair that changes their lives forever. Another movie that deals with this subject quiet well is Say Anything, with John Cusack. He plays a guy from the wrong side of the tracks who asks the valedictorian of his high school out on the last day of school. They start a relationship that makes everybody believe in true love. For those of you who are into a more serious kind of movie of the summer, there are a few out there to please you as well. Stealing Beauty is a movie that takes an artistic view of a young girl coming of age in Italy. Played beautifully by Liv Tyler, the young girl goes to Italy to lose her virginity to a boy she met when she was very young. On her quest she not only learns valuable life lessons and the meaning of true love, but'also that all is not always what it seems For those who enjoy a historic back ground I recommend A Walk on the Moon It is set in the year I96Q, the year when everything seemed to change. Men walked on the moon, Woodstock was held, and the Vietnam War was raging over seas. The story is about a young married mother who feels that her life has become too mundane. To rectify this she has an affair with a hippy clothing salesman who stops over at the campsite where she and her family stay every summer. v ' Well there you have six movies to helpjiet.you started on a great journey of summer time tales as told by those in the movie industry. Advice through the healing of movies Dear Dr. Flick. hear that you're pretty good at matching a movie to a person. Have fun trying to find one that does the trick for me. I am a full time college student and single mom. I'm extremely busy with classes and stuff right now but I would still enjoy having a life. Someone to share the day with, that kind of thing This isn 't likely to happen anytime in the near future as I'm too busy trying to get my life in order, and guys aren 't really wild about women with baggage What would you recommend for a good laugh where the woman gets it all? Signed Computer (sigh . . . ) bound and alone Dear Computer bound and alone (sigh . . .) Your request is a bit of a pickle. There are not many movies out there that deal with single moms in a funny way. Hollywood has been very sensitive about the subject for some reason. That being said, there are a few comedies that do have single mothers in the leading roles. Here are two you should check out; they may not deal with the single parent thing as much as you might like, but they are funny and you might just get what you need. The first movie I recommend is one of my all time favourites, As Good as it Gets. This movie, starring Helen Hunt and Jack Nicholson, shows a single mother who works hard at keeping her son healthy and her disposition positive. With i happy persona that she portrays the outside world she touches life of obsessive compulsive 1 Nicholson. The movie is funny; smart and very well done. Iti show you how Helen Hunt's d acter deals with being a single m and how she ends up finding lov ! a very unusual place. Wild Cats, with Goldie Ha f5 is an oldie but a goody. She play p single mom who wants to coac ' high school football team. She her chance at a high school with ?. worst team in the district. Herd P acter takes on getting this teau p misfits into shape and, in ) process, tries to keep her child ;. It is a cute movie that helped careers of such actors as Wo f Harrelson and Wesley Snipes I Those are my two movies c you. Watch and enjoy.
