Fiona Grisswell One morning in mid-September, I was surprised to see my favourite tree had half dozen yellow leaves scattered amongst its foliage. With the beautiful weather we had this summer, the change in the leaves is following a more leisurely schedule; some years Mother Nature seems to change into her fall suit overnight. Anyone who has taken a course in Biology knows that it is within the chloroplasts found in leaf cells that photosynthesis takes place More importantly, it is in the chloroplast thatthe green pigment.chlorophyll is found in abundance. As well as being involved in the initial photosynthetic reaction, chlorophyll is what gives a leaf its green color Yet in the autumn, birch and poplar leaves turn yellow, while oak and maple leaves turn to various shades of red What happens within the leaf to allow this color change to take place? The first change involves T something called carotenoids, which are also found within the chloroplast Carotenoids' yellow pigment is masked during the summer months by the overwhelming numbers of chlorophyll present in the leaf. With the cooler weather and shorter days of autumn, chlorophyll numbers go down and the leaves turn yellow. What happens within the leaf to allow this color change to take place? The oak and maple leaf's red and purple colors are due to water soluble pigments called antho-cyanins and flavones, which most trees do not produce until autumn With cooler temperatures, the transport of sugars out of the leaves is reduced In some trees, these excessive sugar levels are used to form anthocyanins, producing the vivid red leaves of the Scarlet Oak, or the dull red of a Douglas Maple The various shades are determined by the amount of color pigment present in the leaf Nature really is incredible' 8 Free Forum and Technology October 2003 Science Sidebar Explaining the colours of fall Technically Unqualified CNC's new and improved website is worth a look Liana Ziemer CNC's newly revamped website at www.cnc.bc.ca is loaded with information for students. You can access your email account from the site (yes, you have one if you have a computer account). The library section of the website offers a wide range of articles, from how to use your college email account to MLA style guides, the Cinema CNC movie collection and everything in between. You can also access the library catalogue from the site. You can check the availability of a book, put a hold on it, or renew one you keep forgetting to return. The library will even bring in a book from other libraries for you, and you do not even have to get off your computer chair. Coming soon to the site is access to exam schedules, the ability to search for courses, view your grades and register online. The CNC website can provide you with the email address and phone extension of all faculty members, which is great if your free hours do not line up BY-ELECTION NOTICE Election Dates: Tuesday, October 7th and Wednesday, October 8thth, 2003 Voting booth is located in Association Office For the position of COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR with your instructor's office hours. Jason Spenrath, the CNC webmaster, has done a good job making the site pretty straightforward and easy to get around in. My only criticisms are that sometimes I find it is too easy, and there is almost too much content, and I often find myself off in Kathy Plett's badfadscom link instead of doing my research. Coming soon to the site is access to exam schedules, the ability to search for courses, view your grades and register online Your guess is as good as mine as to how soon "soon" is, but I can't wait to kiss that long registration line up goodbye. Please see the official By-Election posters around campus or visit the Students' Association office in Room 1-201 for a list of candidates running for this position Term of Office: The person elected to this position will serve the remainder of the term of office, from October 2003 to the end of elections in Spring 2004.
