January 2005 Arts & Entertainment 9 ; The strange thing about Rammstein is the amount of sexuality that seeps through in the music despite a lack of any lyrical understanding. Listen to the beats and you'll understand. The band mines the same industrial beats and electronic flourishes as forbearers such as Ministry and Nine Inch Nails, but their guitar and vocal sound are much more naturaHhan either of those two bands. This is music that can be described in one word: dirty. As the album draws to its conclusion you too will be picking the mud out of your hair. Rating: 35 If you like this try: Ministry - Greatest Fits (Warner Music) , Rammstein is a ringing endorsement of their ability to create a menacing (atmosphere. it The Rammstein formula is a simple but effective one: eerie keyboard .loops that underpin the songs, crushing guitars, and, in many cases, a 1 strange sense of vocal harmony that makes the music all the more unsettling. Most of the songs on Reise, Reise adhere to this formula and give the alburn a grandiose epicleeling to it. You're not quite sure where the album . has taken you after it ends; all you know is that you need a shower. fc,,. By Nathan Kelly &&mmm,t- SME V r '' - . The track finds Frusciante bellowing a chorus of "THE DROOOOOOOOPPPPPP!" for about a minute and a half over top of scorching lead guitar work by Omar Rodriguez-Lopez of The Mars Volta fame. The track burns heavily, which is appropriate considering the song was inspired by Aleister Crowley (who was also immortalized in the Ozzy Osbourne song "Mr, Crowley"). Thejslower songs on the album are good but lack any of the lyrical themes and wit that are present, on Frusciante's better albums. Also, like all of his albums, Inside of Emptiness is under-produced and could use some polish on the vocal and guitar, tracks. That said, some find this to be a charming facet of the singer-songwriter-home-recording thing. Whichever your preference, there's definitely something for you on this LP. Rating: 3.55 If you like this try: John Frusciante -The Will to Death (Record Collection) p.s. It's much better
