I I K H w 4 Opinion March 2005 PfSEE fom Dear Editor, Between 1970 and 1995 the bottom seventy percent of Canadian income earners lost about eight billion dollars, which the top thirty percent gained. What does this mean to you and me? This is the most clearly defined proof that the middle and lower classes are being slowly and systematically driven into further poverty by the wealthy few. Since the election of Gordon Campbell's Liberal party this trend has been accelerated and we are now clearly seeing the results as smaller business leaders such as John Brink ( a previous supporter of the Campbell Liberals) are now realizing that the new legislations created by the B.C. Liberals are solely directed at giving the largest corporations the greatest opportunities to absorb or destroy the smaller businesses. This is a prime example of how the lowest seventy percent of income earners are being driven into lower paying lifestyles. The same is true for our logging truck drivers who are now complaining that they are driving for nothing as wages are now dictated by Canfor whose primary function is to increase profits for the wealthy owners and shareholders. Since corporate power now rules our government, they are in complete control of our destinies and our own politicians are the ones selling us out. When corporations demand lower tax rates the politicians give in under the threat that if they do not lower rates the businesses will move on to another more business friendly country. Even in our own country one province increases its tax credits to an industry in an attempt to steal the industry from another province pitting Canadian against Canadian in a drive to wrestle greater profits at the cost of needed tax dollars. Corporate taxation is a corner stone of the funding for a great deal of our social safety net and all t i. m :. i The Doers & Run Chico Run April 4th Fyre (61 1 Brunswick) This ain't your grandma's indie rock. But if it is, she's pretty cool. CFUR Radio is proud, and smug, to present the most amazing indie poprocksynth show to hit Prince George. This April 4tn, the chosen few, well. ..those who buy tickets, will be allowed to feast their eyes and ears on not one, but two (!) of BC's finest bands, Run Chico Run and The Doers. Run Chico Run is a two-piece from Victoria. Oddly enough, two people are all you need to play drums, keyboards, guitars and sing. When trying to describe Run Chico Run's latest album Shashbo, the terms swirl-pop, space-rock, and spaza-matazztronica come to mind. Robots with guitars, ET with a drumkit, lawnmowers with synthesizers... you get the point. (More info at www.runchicorun.com). Now, The Doers, they offer up a whole different kind of indie rock. Imagine bass heavy bands like The Minutemen, Beat Happening, and Polvo. Now add to it some great malefemale lead vocals, and you've shaken yourself an indie rock cocktail... and they have Mike Watt cred; look into it. (More info: www.thedoers.com). All of this fabulousness will be going down at the sexy new venue in town, Fyre. Tickets are $10 for CFUR Members, and $12 for non-members. You can purchase them at CFUR Radio, CNC Students' Association Office, and Books & Co. More info can be yours by calling 960-song, or emailing infocfur.ca. This event is a CFUR fundraiser, so come check out some great music and help us out at the same time. The loss of this revenue contributes again to the increased wealth of the few at the cost of the many. This is why Gordon Campbell could claim B.C. was financially in trouble. The lower and middle class people are being used by the wealthy as a form of income to be used and discarded when the whim suits them. This is why unions were developed in the first place to protect the vast majority of workers from exploitation by the rich. This is why being tied to labour is not the evil thing that the Liberals would have you believe. Who do you support? The wealthy few or the huge middle and lower income classes? If we the common people do not act now to reverse corporate raiding of our very livelihood then soon we will also be living in a third world country run by the wealthy few. The recent advertising that promoted the great job the B.C. Liberals have done at making our province "the best place on earth" were directed at the wealthy not the common man and if you doubt this fact realize that each time one of those ads aired that money spent would have performed an estimated eleven surgeries. Instead of lowering surgical waiting times, this money was spent in an attempt to make our medical system seem unsustainable while trying to sway the opinions of the lower and middle classes to vote for the same people who would see us under the control of the wealthy. The time is now to stand up and say we will not be used as a commodity for the wealthy and save our children from an even worse fate as these policies become more entrenched in our society.
