CNC Students' Association - all about student advocacy by Andrew Steele The College of New Caledonia Students' Association (CNCSA) is a vital component of the social and political life of this institution. Unfortunately, many students are unaware of the Association's ongoing contributions to their experience at CNC. In an effort to remedy this, Free Forum sat down recently with the Students' Association Resource Co-ordinator Rob Mealey to discuss ongoing programs, future events, and the general purpose of the CNCSA. Formed in 1978, and a member of the Canadian Federation of Students (CFS) since 1981 , the CNC Students' Association has continually championed both social and political causes, particularly those which directly affect students. Past events have included an elaborate display involving a hot air balloon in the Atrium last year, to raise awareness about skyrocketing tuition fees. The Association was also involved in orchestrating CNC's participa tion in the national strike on January 25th of this year, which was the largest public protest in Canadian history. Mealey himself traveled to Ottawa this past November to meet with Conservative MP Jay Hill, as part of a CFS initiative in which all member colleges sent delegates to meet with their representative MPs and discuss education issues. In addition to their continued support in the fight to lower tuition fees, the Students' Association is now deeply involved with the Rock The Vote BC campaign. A non-partisan campaign aimed at get-ling students, and young people in general, to register and vote in the May 17, 2005 BC Provincial elections, Rock The Vote has already registered over 600 new voters in Prince George aloneT Events hosted by the campaign have included film screenings and a Unit 731 show at The Generator on Tuesday, March 8. Many other events are planned, including an Information Fair in the CNC atrium, during which students will have the opportunity to talk to representatives from each party about their platforms for the upcoming election. A concert is also planned for the 23rd of March at the Civic Centre, featuring Sweatshop Union with Kyprios, Kardinal Offishal, and special guest Moka Only. Tickets will cost about $22.00, and will be available through Ticketmaster. There will be 1000 tickets up for grabs, with some being given away through random draws and other contests. The show will also feature prizes of mp3 players, T-shirts, hoodies and more, so be sure to get your ticket before they sell out. As for the Students' Association itself, the name of the game is student advocacy, be it through organization of campaigns such as Rock The Vote BC, or through Federal and Provincial lobbying on the behalf of student causes and concerns. When asked about the Association's main goals, Mealey says it basically comes down to improving education for everyone. "We have always believed that anyone who wants an education should get one," he says. 'The Students' Association is all the students here at CNC, and we are here to work for you." If you would like more information about the CNCSA, or any of its numerous programs and campaigns, you can contact Rob Mealey, Kevin Lalonde, or Valentine Crawford at (250) 562-7415, or check out the website at www.cncsa.ca. Or, if you like a more personal approach, you can stop by the office, located in room 1-201 at CNC. Office hours are usually 9 a.m. - 4pm Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m - 3 p.m. on Fridays, but may be subject to change during campaigns. Questions, comments and suggestions are always welcome, so check out your Students' Association and get involved in your school, your province, and your future.
