"We have a government that continually tells us it's improving access to post-secondary education, but students question their commitment," said Rob Mealey, Resource Coordinator for the College of New Caledonia Students' Association. "Over the past four and a half years we've seen tuition fees more than double at our colleges and universities while at the same time grants programmes were cut. Student debt is skyrocketing out of control, enrollment has been dropping at CNC and virtually all other community colleges and now even the universities are starting to become i concerned with enrollment 1 levels. Mealey also noted that the Budget Speech might be a clear sign that the BC Government's dedication to post-secondary education during the previous BC election has again dried up. "We watched the Budget Speech and read the transcript. Would you like to know how many times Minister Taylor referred to 'post-secondary education' or 'tuition fees' during her Budget Speech yesterday? Zero, she never mentioned either term at all. And the word 'education' only came up once. Where is their commitmentto a highly-educated, diverse workforce that can drive our economy for decades to come?" "This budget update does little for students," said Shirley Zornow, Chairperson of the Students' Association. "What students at CNC and across BC need is for Premier Gordon Campbell, Minister of Finance Taylor and Minister of Advanced Education Murray Coell to commit themselves and the BC Government to take the steps needed to improve access to post-secondary education - increase funding for our colleges Is political social events such as pub nights and concerts. Both committees will be open to the entire student body, and volunteers are needed. Information on how to get involved can be obtained at the C.N.C.S.A. office, located in room 1 -201 , across from the cafeteria and right next door to the Free Forum. The association has also played a key role in the extension of the cafeteria hours for study purposes, now 6 a.m. until midnight, and in the construction of a student lounge near the cafeteria; details will be available in future issues of Free Forum. In addition to this, there is an upcoming by-election to fill the positions of Indigenous Students' Liaison and Women Students' Liaison. The campaigns are ongoing, with voting taking place on October 4tn, 5tn, and 6tn. Please note that for the Indigenous Students' Liaison, only First Nations students may vote, and for the Women Student's Liaison only female students may take part in the polls. The Student Association is a very important part of the College of New Caledonia, and is vital in determining the direction of our school as a whole. "By the middle of 2006 BC students will be paying almost half a billion dollars more in tuition fees than they were in 20012002," added Zornow. "Surely students, seniors and other groups who've seen funding slashed and critical programmes eliminated over the past few years have done their part to help the BC Government reduce H I ? Students' Association representatives will be giving a presentation to the BC Government's Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services on Tuesday, October 11, to lobby for additional funding for CNC and other BC colleges and universities. -i- J - - - . - . . . vi . - rrrvfn & r r : it TMTr M-UHNMUIrtW ftUCHrtllUN ur aiUUCNIJ OF NIWGA12ED0NIA -TUBENiBftSSQi DJ Midian spins hip-hop during the Orientation Day "Toonie For 'more, information please pbhtactR1'"' " sfl CNC Students" Association: Shirley Zornow, Chairperson Rob jMealey?v Resource poordinatorj: g.
