FfNEE FOfMJN I High Druid of Sh look Review ly Michael Brisbois Reader's Advisor, Prince Ifteorge Public Library 'High Druid of Shannara: Straken iy Terry Brooks Terry Brooks has been a staple of fantasy readers since the late p970's when his first novel, pe Sword of Shannara, wecame a massive success. Overtime, his first novel has iecome dated primarily due The Lord of the Rings formula that dominates word. Brook's multi- generational fantasy epics ave slowly drifted away from this problem and in recent years his writing has achieved a level unseen L .. . . in earlier works. He has shown a remarkable level of independence from his fan base as he constantly moves his imaginary Four Lands into greater and greater social development, altering the form and impact of politics, magic, and technology in ways that allow him to tell his story. Straken is the final volume in the second trilogy to feature Grianne Ohmsford but focuses primarily on her nephew, Pen. Pen's journey to rescue his aunt is an interesting twist on the standard rescue of the princess, as Pen is hardly a knight and Grianne is a reformed murderer. An observant reader will enjoy the use of the dragon (the first to appear in Brook's now 13 Shannara novels). Harold Bloom has pointed out that one does not read Proust for the plot, 13 annara: Straken and the same holds true for adventure fiction, but for different reasons. In Proust, the plots are so dense and obtuse that one may go mad trying to follow it all, but in novels like Straken, it is because the outcome is all ready known good will triumph. As the final volume in a trilogy, Straken of course wraps up the desperate victory, but not without a few twists and a rather melancholy ending. The honest truth that Brooks works hard on improving with every new work means that he has achieved a much more interesting and concise style of prose given to more poetic phrasing.
