What makes byJolene Brisbois One of the most difficult pieces of writing to produce is an honest self-evaluation. Perhaps even more difficult is writing a self-evaluation after a mirror has been held up for you to contemplate yourself in. This is what has happened for me, the Managing Editor of Free Forum. The self-evaluation is of Free Forum and the mirror was held up in part by an article written recently in Maclean's Magazine. Now, to be fair, the Maclean's article was not written about Free Forum at all. In part because I never sent the author, Paul Wells, a sample of our publication, but also because the article i .... ... .j only discussed a few campus newspapers. In a nutshell, Wells' article is a discussion of what makes a campus newspaper good. The final verdict in his debate is time equals quality. Newspapers that only came out once a week or less often produced far superior papers than those that rushed to produce daily papers. At first glance, this would seem to be a good sign for Free Forum, as we only publish once a month; however, the flip side to Well's argument is that students write columns but have nothing new to say. Unfortunately, that last part is all too familiar. Take this article for instance, for those of you who have not read the Maclean's article, PfNEE FOftUT - Volume 4 Edition 3 Dec 2005 Circulation 1,500 General Inquiries cncsncnc.bc.ca http :www. en csa .caf reef oru m College of New Caledonia Suite 1-120 3330, 22nd Avenue Prince George BC V2N 1P8 562-2131 loc. 214 Managing Editor Jolene Brisbois cncsncnc. bc.ca Features Editor Andrew Steele featurescncsncnc.bc.ca Coordinating Editor Kim Bonnell cncsncnc. bc.ca Production Editor Anne Blanchard cncsncnc.bc.ca Advertising Manager Justin Simon cncsncnc.bc.ca Writers: Anne Blanchard, Kim Bonnell, Jolene Brisbois, Justin Simon, Andrew Steele. Free Forum is a member of the Canadian University Press. a newspaper my writing may seem like a response to Well's article. And for me that is what it started as. But now, after reading what Well's had to say, I realize that I am writing for the sake of taking up space. All too often we write an article to take up space, not to address an issue that is important to us or to our readers. Another important argument in Well's article is the fact that campus newspapers are on, well, a campus. Yet they rarely address the two things that happen on campus: teaching and research. Now, in the defence of Free Forum, CNC is a community college and focuses largely on University Transfer and Trades programmes. There is an awful lot of teaching, and teaching techniques that go unnoticed by Free Forum. Not to mention the programmes themselves that can be featured. Now I shall develop a resolution for my self-evaluation of Free Forum. All to often we just fill the newspaper and hope it goes away until next month: which it always does. I propose that the editors at Free Forum work to make a concerted effort to make every article relevant to our readers and us. That we hunt down interesting articles by speaking to more people and begin to get to know CNC: students, staff, faculty, deans, the president, board t'lsemf. sm?"' : - . s . , k ; -? .
