c Venturing into the dragon's den by Anne Blanchard Production Editor Another school year is quickly drawing to a close, and those of us who are leaving CNC are facing the future with mixed emotions. The college is a small community and when it's time to step outside that comfort zone, inevitable feelings of discomfort shadow the excitement of exploring new horizons. It's unnerving to know that one part of your life is almost done - especially when you don't have an inkling what the next stage will bring. It feels like only yesterday that I first stepped into a CNC classroom - excited to be returning to school, but worried whether I would fit in with students who were the age of my own children. To my surprise I discovered CNC has a huge population of mature students, who naturally gravitate to each other. As well, the younger students are fun to be around; they have an exuberance and spirit that, unfortunately, often gets tarnished as we age. In my time at CNC I've completed the Writing and New Media Technologies programme, and by semester's end I'll have an Associate's Degree in hand as well. We have a very small group of volunteers at the paper, and out of necessity, our jobs often overlap. I've done interviews, taken pictures, put together ads, and written everything from news to satire. Amazingly, I've even grown fond of our tiny office, despite its similarity to a cold, dark cave At the end of this school year I expected to leave CNC and trek up the hill to even higher education, but these past months I've been devilled by an unexpected restlessness - and as the application deadline came and went - I surprised family and friends (and even myself) by deciding not to apply to UNBC. I'm still slightly dizzy from my dash over that smoking bridge, but even in my lightheaded state, one fact is ominously clear"- as of April I have to start searching for a full-time job. Thankfully, I'm not alone in my dread- friends from the WRIT programme, who have already made the leap into the workforce, have confessed the same insecurities - the fear of never finding a job and of being woefully unprepared despite 1 rip' mM FftEEFOM. two years of training in writin and print & web design.
