Add some color to your life Surrounded by the endless chatter and fast-paced acoustic guitar licks, the warm atmosphere envelopes you and the colours do your eyes embrace. The layers of oil and pastels draw you ever closer into the world of Graham Pearce's "Xi Guan Girls", his newest and 2nd solo exhibition of his work. The Xi Guan Girls, brought to his focus by his girlfriend, a fellow artist, is the inspiration of his new exhibition. On a CNC sponsored trip to China last summer, Graham found new inspiration through his camera lens which also influenced his work on his canvases. Graham started painting seriously in 19971998 during his time in university. Always being a creative soul, painting creates an escape, as does poetry. His first solo show opened in 2004, displaying primarily black and white works with deep colour patterns. Some of these works showing daily life. From 2004 to 2007, Graham worked on this collection of paintings and photographs, using the bright colours and pastels to appeal to the "average Joe" and differentiate from the normal visual palette of everyday Prince George scene. For a man with no formal training, his art exhibitions attract great interest. Seeing himself as a 5th rate artist and a 2nd rate showman, he feels himself growing more as an artist with every painting and show. "Art is about self-expression", explained Graham. Aside from having a job he loves, as an English instructor in the Arts and Sciences Department, painting still remains his activity of escape, allowing him, when the artistic mood arises, an alternative outlet. For his next show, an idiosyncratic photo series with international students at certain forest industry businesses may be in the works. As for new works from Mr. Graham Pearce, expect more abstract, lots of lines, colours, more emotion and very clean works with texture. In the future, a roadshow of his work may be on the horizon, perhaps stopping in Prince Rupert, Victoria and Vancouver for shows. . - , :, , Till next time, enjoy great art and the beauty around you. , r , .,- " ' t v; P , M.J Sullivan W .-' 5 College of New Caledonia - Ion r j- ., ?
