5. Leatherface, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series- Part of a seriously inbred family, Leatherface created his mask with the flesh of some of his victims. This torturous terror wields a chainsaw and chases down his terrified victims so that their remains can be cooked in the messed up family's chilli, a chilli that has won them prizes. By far, one of the most hideous looking out of the bunch, except for Jason without his goalie's mask. Apparently, the first movie was based on a true story; think twice before eating at a chilli cookout in the States. 6. Hannibal Lectur, Silence of the Lambs series- Truly a genius, Dr. Lectur is by far the most intelligent on our monster list. After watching his sister be tortured and eaten in WW II, this evil genius develops his own taste for human flesh. Eventually, he becomes Dr. Lectur, killing and eating some of his patients. In prison, he is studied by FBI agent, Clarice Starling who was originally sent to interview him to gain insight into another case she is working on. They develop an odd kinship and when he escapes, hedoes not come after her, even it would be fairly easy for him to make her one of his victim's. Quid prod quo, what does Hannibal say he ate the Census taker with? 7. Candyman, the Candyman series- Like the old legend of Bloody Mary, Candyman is called by saying his name five times into a mirror. The son of a slave who was tortured to death, Candyman has come back to exact revenge out of anyone brave enough, or stupid enough to call him forth. 8. Norman Bates, Psycho- Good ole momma's boy Norman Bates runs the Bates Motel under the ruse that he is also looking after his ailing mother. One problem; dear old momma is a preserved corpse in the basement of their house. Norman murders off some of the guest, dressed as dear ole momma. This Hitchcock film features the infamous shower scene, where one of the female guests is stabbed to death in the shower. Hence, always make sure you have a clear shower curtain, not a lot of room to run if someone gets in there, trying to kill you, but at least you'll be able to spot death coming. 9. Chucky, Child's Play series- The soul of a madman resides in a child's doll after he is chased into, a toy factory by a detective and shot. In order to avoid death, Charles Lee Ray transfers his soul to a Good Guy doll. The doll is then bought and given to Andy for his birthday by his mother..This tiny terror tries to transfer his soul into Andy and kills anyone the child tries to tell. Of course, his evil plan is thwarted, Andy is saved and more movies are made, including Chucky's Bride. I have to wonder why this guy didn't transfer his soul into something cool like a Ninja Turtle, or a He-Man figure. Better yet, why didn't he transfer his soul into a Luke Skywalker figure or a Han Solo figure, which would have been way cool? 10. Ghostface, Scream series- Made to make fun of the campy plots of slasher flicks, Scream follows the somewhat predictable storyline of most slasher flicks. Donned in a mask, of course, this pale-faced, hooded villain chases the not so bright screaming victims modeled in movies like Halloween and Friday the 13th. Unlike previous psychos, this one harasses his victims with their cell phones before leaping in for the kill. It's pretty cheesy, but it has its jump moments. Just goes to show you that even in our age of cell phones and call display, serial killers can get around that, they don't have to cut the phone lines anymore. Besides, even if you do call 911, generally it's awhile before anyone comes to your rescue. Though most of these flicks are a little predictable and slightly campy, they're still worth the watch. Most were created in the latter part of the 20th century; however Psycho came out in the 1960's. What would be the one I recommend the most? Probably Freddy vs. Jason as it is one of the more recent and there are two of the monster menaces in one show. There are other shows that are just as frightening to watch all this month; Saw, The Grudge, When a Stranger Calls, The Hills Have Eyes, The Hitcher, Black Christmas, The Changeling, Wrong Turn, Final Destination, The Exorcist. Just pay a visit to one of the local movie stores, or head up to Wal-Mart and buy them for cheap. If you have satellite or cable, many of them are on late night channels. In closing, I will share with you a little tale of the most frightening scene I have ever seen in a horror movie, the title I cannot remember. Happy family leaves house for the day. While they are gone, a man enter the house and looks carefully through their things, okay violating, yes, terrifying no. Family comes home. Later that night, the happy parents tuck in the happy kids and get into bed themselves. The wife's arm drops over the bed. She says to her husband, "I thought we left the dog outside." Camera pans a shot of under the bed where a man lies, licking the woman's hand. I didn't see what happened next. I was on the floor, curled into the fetal position as that is the most terrifying scene I have witnessed in a horror movie. Why? Because that is more possible than a machete wielding maniac or possessed doll. To this day, I do not have a bed frame for that reason. Okay, I am kidding about that, a little. Happy Halloween to everyone and enjoy a few nights curled up with a few freaky movies College of New Caledonia - Ion 8
