F\ PAWN. aN ES The Jokers representation of this is shown plainly. He slouches and moves spasmodically. Also, his bright contrasting clothing and makeup bring to life his insanity and unpredictable nature. The Joker’s hair is even a mess! When he speaks, he does so with massive ranges in modulation. He can go from a whisper, to an immediate scream. By doing so he is able to convey his ideas ferociously and without mercy. The Joker also has a distinct laugh, which he uses in uncomfortable situations (all the time). This is why they balance each other; Batman is power and righteousness; the Joker is chaos. Harvey Dent’s point of view is shown when he reasoned that, “..., you either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” In the movie, Harvey Dent experienced the horrible loss of Rachel Dawes, his fiancé. This loss, caused and created by the Joker, drove Dent into a kind insanity. In this world he says to Batman and Jim Gordon, “You thought we could be decent men in an indecent time’ but you were wrong! The world is cruel. And the only morality in a cruel world is chance. Unbiased, unprejudiced, fair.” When looking at Harvey Dent we see he represents a two faced coin. On one side he is anormal, good-looking guy; on the other, a disfigured sociopath putting other people’s lives into the hands of a coin toss. Before the accident, Harvey Dent was a reliable, honourable man. His coin had two good sides. He loved Gotham and had its best interests first in his heart. He had very high ideals for Gotham to live up to. However after the tragedy, he descended into a downward spiral of depression and insanity. This proves that idealism is easily corrupted and that even the greatest, the most seemingly unshakable among us can fall. They can fall harder than anyone could even imagine. Christopher Nolan is a brilliant director: hidden in his movies are some of the most profound messages and morals. Some examples are the balance between right and wrong and how the path to tyrannical leadership is paved with good intentions. Overall there is a theme of obsession. Harvey Dent obsesses over the feelings of guilt for his loved one’s death. Batman obsesses over his parents’ death to the point where he don’s the suit and brings justice to the streets of Gotham. That is part of the reason why Nolan made the greatest comic book adaptation to date. Nolan brought to the plate some of the most raw interpretations or order, chaos, and corruption. sedvad os = —) = = ca God hada = ™ a
